Recruiting and retaining diverse talent is a challenge for many hiring managers, especially those with little or no training in unconscious bias. So what is it, and why do you need to know about it?

A diverse workforce improves decision-making, problem-solving, creativity, innovation and flexibility – all great things that can have a measurable impact on your bottom line. Which is why diversity and inclusion is increasingly a focus area for Australian businesses. A recent LinkedIn Survey reports that  78% of companies are currently prioritising diversity as a way to improve their culture, and 62% do so to boost financial performance. And yet despite their best intentions, many businesses struggle to meet their own diversity goals or the expectations of the public. So what keeps tripping them up?

Unconscious bias

We all have inadvertent preferences for particular types of people, fed by those unconscious snap judgements that we all like to make about people – marking them off as either different from, or similar to us. This is unconscious bias – and without an awareness of it, you may inadvertently fail to hire the best person simply because “their face doesn’t fit”.  And for those that do manage to get through the door, retention may be a challenge as hires need to feel included and accepted before they can be their best selves at work.

Giving everyone a fair go

The recruitment process is most susceptible to unconscious biases, where selection choices can inadvertently lead to discriminatory treatment, negative business culture and a lack of workforce diversity.
